Google and the Associated Press announced this week that they will sponsor the new AP-Google Journalism and Technology Scholarship program, which will provide $20,000 scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year to six undergraduate or graduate students pursuing or planning to pursue degrees at the intersection of journalism, computer science and new media. The Online News Association, the world’s largest organization of digital journalists, will administer the program. (H/T contributor Royce Haynes for the heads up on this.)
Since it’s at the intersection of technology and journalism, this program holds obvious appeal to us here in the Silicon Prairie News office. But, given the strong response to our recent call for additional SPN contributors, and in light of the smattering of news-centric tech startups and organizations in the region, we figure there might be other folks out there on the Silicon Prairie with a similar level of interest in this opportunity.
The program is targeted at individual students creating innovative projects that further the ideals of digital journalism. A key goal is to promote geographic, gender and ethnic diversity, with an emphasis on rural and urban areas.
Thanks to our sponsor
A post Monday on the Google blog gave readers the following food for thought:
Consider the following:
- Are you an undergraduate or graduate student in the U.S. with new ideas about news?
- Have you already created original journalistic content with computer science elements?
- Do you find yourself brainstorming different ways of telling stories and covering your community news using technology?
