The inaugural Thinc Iowa conference provided an arena for conversation on the common ground between established corporations and startups. Nine speakers, ranging from the founder of a new payments network to the chairman of a worldwide advertising network, took the stage Friday at the Temple for Performing Arts in downtown Des Moines to contribute to that conversation.

To be timely, we’re releasing the entire Thinc Iowa Video Series this week as recorded via Livestream. Thanks to the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a Kansas City-based foundation that works to harness the power of entrepreneurship and innovation, for sponsoring the Livestream and Video Series, and to our video and post-production team made up of Event1 Video and EvolveLook for the final cut from Event 1 Video to be published in the coming weeks.

The third speaker in our video series is Andy Murray, founder and chairman of Saatchi & Saatchi X, a worldwide advertising network for which he oversees marketing and advertising and technology efforts. Also this year, Murray launched Mercury 11, a company that mentors entrepreneurs with disruptive ideas.

Murray’s talk really honed in the conference’s theme of bringing startups and corporations together, but he admitted his ideas on the subject didn’t exactly come easily at first. “I really had to scratch my head to think, what do these things have in common?” he said. “But the more that I really tried to work through this and understand it, the more I saw the common areas and the more it became clear that there are some common challenges that corporations have in today’s environment and share with startups.”

Murray’s talk focused on five commonalities: a focus on entrepreneurship; seeking authenticity; creativity from the fringe; cracking the code on collaboration; and scaling, pivoting and changing.
