Startup Weekend’s spread through the region’s major college towns continues.

Organizers today announced that Startup Weekend Lincoln will make its debut September 7-9 at Avery Hall on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

During Startup Weekend, teams devote 54 hours to building a web or mobile application that could form the basis of a credible business. It starts Friday evening, when participants gather and introduce ideas for startups. They then spend Saturday and Sunday working in teams to bring a handful of those initial ideas to fruition. The event concludes on Sunday night, when teams pitch to a panel of judges.

Adam Barney, Will Dye, Amanda Thonen and Jeff Thonen form the group that’s organizing the Lincoln event. Beyond the weekend’s date, location and organizers, other details are still being hashed out.

The inaugural Lincoln event follows Startup Weekend’s debut in Iowa City (home of the University of Iowa) and Columbia (University of Missouri) last fall. Startup Weekend also has events in Des Moines, Kansas City and Omaha. Amanda Thonen said she hopes Startup Weekend can be an eye-opening experience for students in Lincoln.

“I hope to tap into some of the student organizations and give them some inspiration very early on,” Thonen said.

She continued: “My expectation is that bringing Startup Weekend to Lincoln will help bridge the gap between successful entrepreneurs and young, budding entrepreneurs that just need some motivation and inspiration.”

SPN will have more on Startup Weekend Lincoln closer to September. In the meantime, people interested in helping out or learning more can contact Amanda Thonen at amanda.thonen@gmail.com.
