Social Media Club, a San Francisco-based non-profit overseeing 350-plus local chapters, recently recognized its Kansas City chapter (SMCKC) as its inaugural “Outstanding Chapter of the Year.”

The award acknowledges SMCKC’s “outstanding efforts in representing Social Media Club goals and values through promoting digital advocacy and serving the local community,” the organization’s announcement stated.

Founded in 2008, activities of SMCKC in its fourth year were hard to miss. From a rally to sign up homes for Google Fiber to a campaign to bring awareness to digital literacy to a social media “help desk” for All-Star Game visitors, SMCKC carried out its overarching organization’s key mission: “If you get it, share it.”

Aside from its community involvement, the club also held monthly breakfast events, happy hours and added a professional lunch series.

“It is deeply gratifying, and I think it’s just such a tremendous testament to the power of this community,” SMCKC president Aaron Deacon said in an email interview Friday when asked what the award means to the organization.

“Social media at some level is really about giving a voice – and the power that goes with that – to a large and diverse crowd,” Deacon said. “To be able to just decide something is important and be able to go out and do it – that’s pretty cool, and it is only possible because we have so many people who are willing to give so much of themselves. And then to have that recognized – it’s nice.”

In 2013, SMCKC plans to help grow the national organization, Deacon said, and continue to “build more meaningful programming and community locally for social media professionals.”
