As more than 30 million viewers will be glued to their television sets on January 10th to watch the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game, one of the team’s playing for the title will have been glued to their computers in the weeks before. The team, University of Oregon, who went undefeated this year with one of the most fast-paced offenses in the game, is a user of Hudl, a video analysis and reporting software used by coaches.

The software, which is now used by 2,600 teams from youth sports to the NFL, was created in 2006 after thee University of Nebraska–Lincoln students worked with their school’s football team to deliver a better video analysis tool. Their about page sums it up:

In 2006 [the founders] realized exactly how much time and effort was spent by major football teams burning DVD copies of game film and distributing phone-book sized paper playbooks to each and every athlete.

There was an obvious and straightforward way to help these teams: make all of the video, play diagrams, and coaching presentations securely available to the entire team over the Internet.

In an email interview with Hudl CEO David Graff, we asked him where their software is at today:

Our last release focused a lot around recruiting since that is the focus for a lot of our coaches right now. Our dev team has been working on a few longer-running projects as well, including site scaling/robustness for our anticipated 2011 growth as well as some work in the mobile arena (although nothing is officially announced, I can let you know that we are all enjoying the iPads we received as our company Christmas gift and we’re excited to put them to good use).

In addition to football, Hudl serves teams in basketball, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball and more. The Hudl staff is currently at 19 full-time and four interns, and they plan to add seven full-time employees in January.

As the college football bowl season is underway and high school teams have wrapped up their playoffs, it’s worth sharing with you some of the Huld users that will be playing or have played. Starting with tonight’s Husker game:
