The creative business energy in the Old Market should raise a few notches at the very end of this month as Bozell, an integrated marketing agency, will be moving into a building on the south edge of the historic district.

First reported by the Omaha World-Herald this past Saturday (see: “Bozell moving east to a more creative space), the more than 50-person agency will be making the move from the Valmont building near 138th Street and West Dodge Road into the old Butternut building at 1022 Leavenworth Street. The space was formerly occupied by the Halo Institute (see our post: Halo Institute relocates to Creighton University).

In moving into the new space – which is located just across the street from KANEKO, a nonprofit center dedicated to exploring creativity – Bozell will join several other creative studios and agencies as residents of the Old Market. Others include Torchwerks (810 South 13 Street), New BLK (1213 Jones Street), and Bailey Lauerman (1299 Farnam Street).

“We are slated to move December 30 provided all the stars align to have the build out complete on time.” said Kim Mickelsen, managing principal of Bozell, in an email interview earlier this week. “It’s been a huge undertaking in a short period of time because we had to upgrade electrical, reconfigure some spaces, add some conference rooms, customize the big kitchen, and we had custom work spaces built for all our staffers.”

Bozell is working with local architecture firm Randy Brown Architects to design the overall space. If it’s anything like Brown’s offices located at 120th & Blondo as well as other project of Brown’s, I expect it’ll be a very cool space. We’ll be sure to stop over and post photos once it’s complete.

To learn more about Bozell and the future move, we conducted a brief email interview with Mickelsen earlier this week:

Silicon Prairie News: What is the current focus of Bozell?

Kim Mickelsen: We are a fully integrated shop and remain committed to that model. We offer a broad range of solutions in house that have evolved based on client needs. We provide a significant amount of marketing consulting as well as execution across all types of tactics. As far as volume, our heaviest workloads right now are in the digital space. From SEO to SEM to social media, applications and web development.

Why are you deciding to move from west Omaha to the Old Market?

We have actually been considering a move for the last few years and have looked at several spaces off and on, but we just never found a space that thrilled us enough to justify the enormous cost of a move. We lucked into the Old Market space in that we heard about it before it was officially listed. We knew it had the right kind of vibe and loved the open space. Moving downtown is a natural for us because there is a growing creative atmosphere that energizes all of us. The space feels very right and will work well for how we work.

How does it compare in size to the old space?

The 1022 Leavenworth space is about 2,000 square feet smaller than our current office, but the footprint and layout of the new space is much more usable. In our “West O” office the curved outer wall and center stairwell break up the space and make it hard to use. The new space feels much bigger because it’s so much more open, and the high ceilings help give it the collaborative feeling we wanted.

Any more details on the new space?

We have worked with architect Randy Brown on designing the overall space, the shared spaces as well all the individual work spaces. In addition to several conference rooms, we have three very cool “pods” that are being built. These flow down the center of the space and are very striking – they are sort of a combination of art installation and collaboration space.
