Kansas City Zaarly on Saturday rolled out the latest iteration of its online marketplace to users in Kansas City, the fourth city to receive the revamped version. The new approach, called Storefronts, deviates from Zaary's original request model – "I'd pay blank for blank" – by putting the service providers who respond to the requests up front. "It was just really … read more

San Francisco Last week, I spent a few days in San Francisco along with Dusty Reynolds, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce's director of innovation and entrepreneurship. We encountered plenty of people familiar with the work of Silicon Prairie News. We met others who had heard of SPN or our events, Big Omaha and Thinc Iowa, but weren't completely familiar with our work and efforts to build our region's entrepreneurial and startup community. The trip was filled with a number … read more

But if that's the case, why isn't everyone working for themselves? Setting aside for the moment that the dream and the reality of running a startup are very different things and that many of those "ideas" are likely terrible, there is clearly … read more

Austin The beauty of writing about a panel discussion between three people frequently featured on the very blog for which you're writing — and a blog co-founded by one of those people — is that you can afford to forgo formal introductions and get right down to business. And, given that this post is long overdue, that's precisely what I intend to do. Earlier this month at South By Southwest Interactive in Austin, Texas, I attended "The Field of Dreams Manifesto," a panel … read more

Kansas City One year ago, Bo Fishback, then president of Kauffman Labs in Kansas City, returned home from a weekend trip to Los Angeles with one thing on his mind: Zaarly. Today, that one thing is his full-time job. Over the past 365 days, Fishback took a frustration – at 6 feet 8 inches tall, he longed for a way offer other airline … read more

In its final issue of 2011, Entrepreneur Magazine features Kansas City's Bo Fishback of Zaarly on its cover for a story on "10 trends that will define opportunity next year." Zaarly, a San Francisco-based startup that Fishback co-founded at Startup Weekend Los Angeles in April, is highlighted in the magazine's second trend, collaborative commerce. "Collaborative commerce is seriously hot stuff in startup circles," Jennifer Wang of Entrepreneur writes. "For proof, we need merely to turn to Zaarly, a San Francisco startup that went from zero to launch in three months, rallying high-profile investors and scoring bucketloads of press for its rocket-like trajectory." … read more
