Des Moines For Paloma Velazquez, writing HTML is a pretty big shift from her previous writing experience. Last May she graduated from Grinnell College with degrees in English and political science. At the time, she was working as a communications coordinator for BitMethod with their app, Change. But after winning a two-year scholarship for Treehouse—a web development education tool—and teaching herself to code, Velazquez recently landed a position as a front-end developer at Des Moines' Webspec Design. … read more

For years, startup founders and entrepreneurs across the Silicon Prairie have sought to get out of basements and coffee shops and make the move to professional workspaces. Thus, a startup culture staple – coworking – emerged. Coworking spaces in and nearby the region's flagship cities of Omaha, Des Moines and Kansas City have been on the rise in the past couple of years, with desks to lease – at our last count – at 15 coworking spaces in a dozen cities. … read more

Des Moines Change is now available for "anyone who wants to ditch their cash register and live a simpler life," according to the app's website. Created by Des Moines mobile app firm BitMethod, Change is a restaurant and retail management system with an iPad-based point of sale. A few months ago, we wrote about the app's launch into private beta at a local coffee shop, the kind of client it aims … read more

Des Moines Last December, I wrote a post asking “Who’s the No. 2 startup in Des Moines?” In that post, I shared the results of an informal (and unscientific) poll that I conducted around the community to seek out which companies were the "top startups." While Dwolla was a unanimous selection at No. 1, there was no consensus on No. 2 or even what makes for a "top startup." The folks I talked to clearly felt like Dwolla was doing the correct things to be at the top even though most people didn't necessarily have a concrete opinion on what those "things" were. It seemed it was Dwolla and then everyone else. Fast forward to today, and progress within the local startup scene has helped bring greater clarity to the question I posed in December. Rather than defaulting to one company to characterize the startup … read more

Des Moines When Amanda Morrow decided last year to launch a new Des Moines meetup group, she did so with tech-challenged designers in mind. "They needed a place to get started that wasn’t overly intimidating or technical," said Morrow, an interactive designer at Des Moines-based BitMethod. "A group where they could be introduced to the fundamentals." Once a month since last June, Design+Tech has sought to provide that place. The group, which averages about 20 people per gathering … read more

Des Moines BitMethod is go for launch on its mission at Mars. Mars Cafe, that is. BitMethod, a Des Moines-based web and mobile app development shop, will celebrate the release of its new product, Change, with a shindig from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Mars Cafe. The event will also serve as a celebration of BitMethod's third birthday. BitMethod has worked with Mars, a Dogtown district cafe, during the development of Change, a restaurant and retail management system with an iPad-based point-of-sale. BitMethod first made public its work on Change last October, and in March the company announced it would focus all its development efforts on the product. Dan Shipton, BitMethod's CEO, shared more about the launch of Change … read more

Des Moines Silicon Prairie News: A couple weeks since BitMethod announced its shift in focus to developing Change, what's your take on devoting most of your time to the product rather than to consulting or client work? | Neil Roberts: Our work always begins with creating beautiful wireframes, mockups and interaction documents we're very proud of, that we intend to keep producing for ourselves and our clients. However, client development has often been a source of stress as we find ourselves straying from the initial vision due to factors out of our control. With Change, we can carry our vision all the way through to a wonderful piece of software. | SPN: Can you describe a couple of the latest and greatest projects … read more
