Cedar Falls Silicon Prairie News: What were the biggest challenges you encountered last year moving from a job in the advertising industry to your current gig with Banno? | Abby Goltz: I would say the biggest challenge was just learning and working in a completely different niche. I went from proof reading disclaimers and pulling manufacturer incentives for automotive advertising to product implementation and support for financial institutions nationwide. This industry is a much more technical environment and very highly regulated. I feel challenged and learn something new every single day which is only one of the many factors attributing to my happiness at Banno. | SPN: Banno colleagues have praised your knack … read more

Cedar Falls As he wrapped up a phone interview Monday afternoon, Banno CEO Wade Arnold expressed a bit of self-effacing gratitude for the coverage of his company, which, as he put it, hails from "the cornfields" of Cedar Falls, Iowa. But, anymore, there's also no mistaking Banno for a company that's wide-eyed about the attention it's getting. Not with some of the world's biggest banks lining up to learn more about Banno's latest offering. … read more

In March, Krista Vogel's bosses at Hurrdat Social Media told her to pack three bags: One for cold weather, one for the beach, and one with the essentials. They then told her to bring her bags to dinner with her coworkers, where they all were surprised with a vacation. The destination? The Black Hills in South Dakota, for a weekend of skiing, bar-hopping and most importantly, no work. “It was a really good bonding experience for all of us,” said Vogel, who noted that the lack of Internet connection was welcomed … read more

Des Moines Last December, I wrote a post asking “Who’s the No. 2 startup in Des Moines?” In that post, I shared the results of an informal (and unscientific) poll that I conducted around the community to seek out which companies were the "top startups." While Dwolla was a unanimous selection at No. 1, there was no consensus on No. 2 or even what makes for a "top startup." The folks I talked to clearly felt like Dwolla was doing the correct things to be at the top even though most people didn't necessarily have a concrete opinion on what those "things" were. Rather than defaulting to one company to characterize the startup … read more
