Omaha Six weeks, officially half way. It feels like we have been here three months already, but at the same time, like we just started. Long days are starting to catch up with me. I can hardly keep track of the days of the week anymore. My language has changed from English to a weird set of acronyms and terminology I had not heard until recently. I literally code all day, over meals. I even dream about code. But this is what I signed up for, and I'm having a blast… read more

Des Moines (Guest post by Frank Merchlewitz) A list post! Hooray! It was only a matter of time before I created some good old-fashioned clickbait. Let me start by saying I love Codecademy. I couldn’t have gotten to the level I’m at now without their introductory Javascript course. But as any good web developer will tell you, the best way to learn is by actually building something… read more

Seattle (Guest post by Foster Casterline) At 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 27, 14 KU information systems students crammed into our cars and departed for Kansas City International Airport. Ahead of us was a two-day networking adventure to one of the most vibrant technology communities in the world: Seattle. We each had expectations going in, but prepared for two things: lots of rain and an incredible experience ... read more

Omaha (Guest post by Dusty Davidson) I try not to get caught up in internet flame wars, regardless of which side of the topic I happen to land on. However, I do find the whole “Why are there no female speakers at Nebraska Code Camp” to be an interesting lesson in a bunch of things. The short version is this: Nebraska Code Camp, a volunteer-run conference focusing on all things software development in Nebraska, made a call for speakers and then published the lineup: 48 men and 0 women. Subsequently a bit of a storm erupted on social media ... read more

Omaha Four weeks. It's crazy to think we are already a third of the way through Omaha Code School. We've come a long way since my last update. Let me get you up to speed with what we are doing. Up until this point, our programs didn't have any persistence. That means when we shut down the program, any information we had entered was destroyed and we had to re-enter it the next time we started up again... read more

Des Moines (Guest post by Frank Merchlewitz) Long time no blog! Coding is a lot like exercise, in that I’ve done neither for about two weeks. And I suppose it’s difficult to gain progress in both coding and fitness without consistent effort—even just 15 minutes a day. So that’s what I’ve been doing during the week, slowly but surely (with programming, not exercising). I’m done with my HTML/CSS refresher and set to delve deeper into Python… read more

Omaha (Guest post by Andy von Dohren) We've come a long way in the first two weeks. We started out small, only coding in Ruby on the command line. Our first assignment was to write a small program to keep track of pets for a humane society... read more
