Des Moines (Guest post by Frank Merchlewitz) Long time no blog! Coding is a lot like exercise, in that I’ve done neither for about two weeks. And I suppose it’s difficult to gain progress in both coding and fitness without consistent effort—even just 15 minutes a day. So that’s what I’ve been doing during the week, slowly but surely (with programming, not exercising). I’m done with my HTML/CSS refresher and set to delve deeper into Python… read more

Omaha (Guest post by Andy von Dohren) We've come a long way in the first two weeks. We started out small, only coding in Ruby on the command line. Our first assignment was to write a small program to keep track of pets for a humane society... read more

Iowa City (Guest post by Roby Miller) Startups are hard work, and most startups fail. Some people compare startups to rollercoasters because of the highs and lows you will inevitably experience. I can tell you firsthand that the lows will keep you from sleeping and the highs will keep you working through the night. Either way, you won't get enough sleep… read more

Washington, D.C. (Guest post by Tej Dhawan) I just wrapped up a very full day meeting in Washington with several senators and their staff on the issues surrounding patent reform. This day was coordinated by the Application Developers Alliance, an advocacy group I connected with in December around the time of the House vote on the Innovation Act (House Bill 3309). Before I go further, political correctness stalwarts as well as trolls themselves are calling for the name trolls be dropped and Patent Assertion Entities (PAEs) be used instead ... read more

Kansas City (Guest post by Matt Angell) Kirk Hasenzahl and I started RareWire in 2010 with a mission of simplifying and improving the app creation process. We developed a simple language that makes it easy for designers, web developers and front-end programmers to build truly native mobile apps. In the past three and a half years, we have built hundreds of apps and developed a robust engine that produces native iOS and Android apps. But it all started when Kirk and I met ... read more

Washington, D.C. (Guest post by Ryan Weber) A few weeks ago, it was my privilege to represent Kansas City’s tech industry at the TechVoice DC Fly-In. TechVoice is a policy advocacy organization powered by CompTIA and TECNA (Tech Councils of North America). KCnext is a member of TECNA, and I serve on the executive committee. Our membership has been a great resource for KCnext while we continue to grow the organization ... read more

Omaha (Guest post by Andy von Dohren) Omaha Code School is the first course of its kind in Omaha. There are lots of similar courses in larger cities across the nation, such as New York and San Francisco, where our instructor, Sumeet Jain, lived and taught a similar course. After he moved to Omaha, he and his cousin saw an opportunity to do something similar here. They founded Omaha Code School last fall and began accepting applications. There were more than 70 applicants from the U.S. and across the world. Eventually the applicant pool was whittled down to 14—the inaugural class ... read more

Des Moines (Guest post by Frank Merchlewitz) Over winter break, I made a decision: In the coming months, I would learn everything I needed to know about being a web developer. The biggest obstacle? My own ignorance. During high school I took a few programming courses (Perl, Java and Robotics). My crowning achievement was making a LEGO-bot spin in a circle while playing John Williams’ “Imperial March." But I was easily discouraged. My coding frustration generally amounted to giving up on projects all together ... read more

Lincoln (Guest post by David Chait & Chris Davis) Any entrepreneur can attest that a startup is all-consuming. From endless hours working to infinite hours thinking through your company, startup life is life. As such, there is nothing more important than a strong team that motivates, complements and challenges each other—and, of course, has fun ... read more
