On June 24, Diana Kander‘s novel “All In Startup” finally hit shelves and to say its reception was warm seems to be an understatement.

Among a number of other lists, Kander’s book was named to this week’s New York Times best seller list, in the nonfiction category of “Advice, How-To & Miscellaneous.” The book also appeared on the Wall Street Journal’s list of best sellers in the nonfiction category.

“I’ve been really surprised at how quickly people are reading it,” Kander told SPN. “I’ve gotten emails from people who are reading it in one, maybe two days, and that’s just not normal for a business book.

“I think they get sucked into the storyline and want to find out what’s going to happen to the characters outside of the business lessons, but they end up learning those anyway. The storyline is the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down.”

“All In Startup” is written in the form of a novel about a man whose company is wildly in debt and who gets a ticket to the World Series of Poker. While he’s there he meets a female entrepreneur and together they have nine days to turn his fortunes around.

Kander raised money through an Indiegogo campaign—ultimately raising more than three times her original $10,000 goal—to get the book in front of professors who teach entrepreneurship across the country.

So far she says about 15 or so have already contacted her and say they’ll be using the book for their class during the fall semester.
