NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge is landing in Kansas City April 11-13 again this year, back at digital marketing agency Ingenology. Registration is still open for web developers, designers, content developers and anyone else interested in building solutions for space exploration, education or other NASA-related missions.

To kick it off, the agency—at 1810 Cherry—will host a party from 6-10 p.m. this Friday, April 4, during First Fridays, complete with beer, snacks and networking.

KC is one of just two Midwest locations of the nearly 90 global locations where the competition is taking place. Teams can work with others at their location or work with others around the world.

The world’s first interplanetary weather app, Sol, won Best Use of Data last year—one of five global awards. It also happened to be built by a KC team made up of talent from Salva O’Renick, Ingenology, RareWire, Sprint, Cerner, VML and Waddell & Reed. The app integrates local weather with weather info pulled from the Curiosity rover on Mars.

This Challenge is part of the Open Government Initiative, signed by President Obama, meant to bridge the gap between the American people and their government. The hope is citizens can have a direct impact on everyday products and services that are discovered through NASA’s data and research.
