Change celebrates 100K transactions with rakija, community party

About 75 members of the Des Moines startup community came out last night to help the Change team celebrate its latest accomplishment: surpassing 100,000 transactions on its point-of-sale app. 

“The turnout was great, the food was delicious,” said Abbie Sawyer, communications coordinator at Change. “Even more than that, events like this give us energy to move forward. We don’t get together with this group of friends and peers very often, and when we do, their support gives us the feeling that we can actually do this in Des Moines.”

Created by the development shop BitMethod, Change is an iOS tablet app that helps businesses simplify point-of-sale transactions. Within 10 months of its launch, Change surpassed 100,000 transactions across its customer base. The team made plans to celebrate the milestone—which technically occured on September 3—at the Riverwalk Hub and commemorated the day with a shot of rakija.

“Rakija shots became a tradition early on with BitMethod when Igor introduced this traditional Serbian homemade liquor to the group,” Sawyer said. “The rakija we drink in the office is made by Igor’s grandfather, from fruit grown in his own backyard. We think that’s pretty cool. We share a round any time we mark a big milestone.”

Local restaurant owners and Change users Sam Auen (pictured above) of Tacopocalypse and Kerri Rush of Fresh Cafe and Market were among the event’s attendees performing cooking demonstrations and offering samples. 

“We reached 100,000 transactions because of our customers,” Sawyer said. “These transactions were logged on their registers, after all. That is why we wanted to feature them and their specialties with 100K Day.”

Earlier this summer the Change team orchestrated a hot dog eating contest at Hotshots Craft Hotdoggery, one of the startup’s latest clients.
