Years ago during his undergraduate studies, it was the night before two big class projects were due and Anand Chittoor knew he wouldn’t finish both of them. So instead he built one project that would satisfy both assignments: a simple risk management database.

Today, that project has morphed into Vue-Matrix, a software platform developed by risk management company Workstreamz Solutions. The system helps businesses weigh all factors and potential risk before beginning a project and allows for better preparedness, which Chittoor says ultimately leads to financial savings.

“When I started my career in 2005 and went into the product management field I saw that there were no tools for me to use,” Chittoor said. So in 2010 he launched West Des Moines-based startup and completely rebuilt the database software he had tinkered with.

When Chittoor and his wife, Jasmine Iyer, who acts as co-founder and CEO, began the bootstrapped company they focused more on fine-tuning their product than marketing the software. Since the soft launch of their first product in February of last year, the now three-person team has launched a new version of their product—Vue-Matrix 1.3.

The web-based system has a number of payment tiers specific to businesses’ size and respective needs, beginning at $49 per month.

“People don’t manage risks as well as they should,” Chittoor (right) said. “But risks happen before issues. If you manage risks well, issues won’t happen.”

Chittoor says Anand Venkiteswaran, the company’s third employee, is responsible for much of the “technology roadmap for Vue-Matrix,” helping to build infrastructure and support the developing product. Through his software, Chittoor hopes to teach other business administrators and entrepreneurs the value of risk management programs, regardless the situation or size of the project.

“There are certain things that we take for granted,” Chittoor said. “We’re always managing risk or mitigating it in your head. The minute you cross the road, you’re doing risk management.”
