1 Million Cups, a weekly startup showcase, kicks off in Des Moines at 9 a.m. today at Green Grounds Cafe in Valley Junction. Ecommerce startup Goodsmiths will present after a live video conference with 1 Million Cups in Kansas City, an event taking place concurrently.

Developed by the Kauffman Labs for Entreprise Creation in Kansas City, 1 Million Cups marks its first expansion with today’s Des Moines event. The new chapter follows the same format as the original – from 9-10 a.m. on Wednesdays, two startups are given six minutes to present their product or service before opening themselves up to a 20-minute question-and-answer session.

“1 Million Cups strives to engage and educate the community about the local startups in (Des Moines), and accelerate the growth of these startups through mutual collaboration,” the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation‘s Nate Olson (pictured), who conceived of the program, said in an email Tuesday.

Earlier this year, Olson told Silicon Prairie News about Kauffman Foundation’s plans to franchise the event. He said Des Moines will be the only new city this year, but in 2013 he aims to launch 18 more cities.

Like its Kansas City counterpart, 1 Million Cups Des Moines is open to the public and free to attend. Aaron Hoffman, an IT consultant, is the organizer. More information, including how startups can inquire about presenting, can be found on the event website.
