Kansas City to host sixth Startup Weekend event Nov. 16-18

Kansas City October 18, 2012 by Michael Stacy

About 100 participants turned out for the last Startup Weekend Kansas City, which took place in April.

The return of Startup Weekend Kansas City is less than a month away.

Kansas City's sixth Startup Weekend event will take place Nov. 16-18 at the Ewing Kauffman Foundation (4801 Rockhill Road), providing participants the experience of launching a business over the course of one weekend.

As at other Startup Weekend events, things in Kansas City kick off on Friday evening, when participants deliver one-minute pitches for their company ideas. Teams then devote Saturday and Sunday to building a handful of those ideas. Teams present the fruits of their weekend labors to a panel of judges Sunday night at a closing session that's open to the public.

Tickets for participants cost $80 ($49 for students) and are available for purchase online. Spectator tickets for Friday night's pitch session or Sunday night presentations cost $15.

TutHopper (now Prodigy Arcadetook first place at the last Startup Weekend Kansas City in April with its idea for teaching kids how to program using web-based games. Also of note from April's event: Divshot, an interface builder for web applications, was born. The startup went on to win the Crowdstart LA pitch contest in July and entered Launchpad LA, a Los Angeles accelerator, in September.
