Wednesday Whimsy: Bonus check? Nah, I’ll just jump from a plane.

Omaha August 8, 2012 by Michael Stacy

It's not uncommon for people of the entrepreneurial set to pepper conversations with well-worn phrases like "taking the leap" into entrepreneurial venture or viewing a business "from 30,000 feet."

But at one Omaha company, those tired expressions have taken on new life.

National Media Brands, a young business that makes products to help other companies build their brands, recently went on a team skydiving outing.

As NMB founder Mark Hennings explains, he offered employees three options last year for their holiday bonus: cash, an iPhone or a skydiving outing. NMB employees opted to make like the protagonists of some Tim McGraw song and, last month, went on their high-altitude outing.

The rationale behind that outing, per a caption accompanying the video of the NMB field trip:

The idea is that starting a business is kind of like jumping out of a plane, so let's all jump out together.

We ran a story a couple weeks ago about some of the creative and unusual perks area companies use to reward employees. At last check, NMB is the only outfit offering experimentation with terminal velocity as one of those perks.
