Sunday Video: Apple’s motivation for making the iPhone

July 1, 2012 by Danny Schreiber

Friday marked the fifth anniversary of the iPhone's public release. As of today, more than 200 million iPhones have been sold, more than 650,000 apps are available and more than 30 billion have been downloaded, according to ABC.

Six months before its release, Steve Jobs took the stage at MacWorld to introduce the revolutionary device. On that same day, January 9, 2007, Jobs sat down for an interview with ABC's Nightline. In it, he answered a questions about Apple's motivation for making the iPhone.

"We're a product company, we love great products," Jobs said (01:22 mark). "One of the big motivating factors for us is just creating something that we all want ourselves, too. And so that's what we tried to do with iPhone. We've been working really hard on it for a few years, and not to beat anybody else but because nobody else was making something that really we thought was the right product and so we've come out with our contribution."
