MindMixer last week announced it has been chosen to participate in the first Code for America Accelerator, a four-month program run by Code for America designed to give tech-based civic startups the network and training they need to grow.

MindMixer, an Omaha startup that makes a web-based platform for community engagement, was one of seven companies chosen for the program, from a pool of more than 230 applicants.

“The fact that we were selected out of more than 230 companies across the world is a testament to how far we have come in a short time,” Nick Bowden, MindMixer’s co-founder and CEO, said in an email Monday. MindMixer, which launched in July 2010, today has more than 200 clients, which include cities, school districts, universities and politicians.

“However,” Bowden added, “we feel like we have only scratched the (surface) in terms of helping communities change their engagement culture.”

The accelerator, which counts former United States CTO Aneesh Chopra and SV Angel partner Ron Conway among its advisors, brings startups together one week per month for curriculum led by industry experts and for networking events with investors. The program will take place at the San Francisco headquarters of Code for America, a nonprofit organization that seeks to harness the power of the web to make “governments work better for everyone.”

For the duration of the four months, participating startups will have access to mentorship, administrative support and office space. Plus, each participating startup receives a $25,000 grant.

Bowden views the accelerator as an opportunity for MindMixer to enhance its product and amplify its brand.

“The accelerator provides a platform to amplify the MindMixer brand, but more importantly amplify the validity of the civic technology market,” he said. “We couldn’t be happier to be a part of a growing civic market and a amazing group of companies and mentors.”
