Sunday Video: Embrace the upsides of failure

June 24, 2012 by Sarah Binder

Usually our Sunday Videos have an inspiring message, and just because this this one has failure written all over it (literally), don't think we're straying from that theme.

"You are constantly failing as a startup. It's how quickly you rebound from that failure that might lead to success," said David Tisch, general manager of TechStars NYC

The video is part of a series called #StartupStories by the NY Tech Meetup. Each one is around five minutes, and they cover topics like pitching to potential investors and building the perfect team.

Appearing in some of them is Fred Wilson, a partner at Union Square Ventures, an investor in Dwolla as well as Foursquare, Twitter and Tumblr.

"Well before you want to raise money, email or call us, or somehow get ahold of us and say, 'I just want to tell you what I'm working on, and I want to have you associate a face and a name to this idea.' " Wilson said in the video titled The Money. "And we get the opportunity to sit back and watch the team evolve and the product evolve."

But, if you only have a few minutes to spare, I like the one on failure, for gems like this:

"I'm just trying to get the point across, that there's a lot of luck. You can do everything right, and still fail, and you have to be confident, you have to be good with that." said Peter Stern, CEO of Bit.ly. "And it's ok to fail. You learn a lot more from failing than you learn from succeeding.
