“One of the first Google image searches is this,” Calvin Pappas says about Googling ‘Silicon Prairie’. “I don’t know about you, but I don’t like that.”

Calvin Pappas, founder of internet privacy startup SelectOut, recently recounted his experience of spending a summer in Silicon Valley as an intern and then returning to Lincoln, Nebraska to pursue his entrepreneurial endeavor.

“(Silicon Valley) has everything you could possibly want,” Pappas (left) said in an Ignite Lincoln presentation in January. “They offered me several jobs to drop out of school and stay there, but I decided to come back here to Lincoln.

“One of the things that I wanted to come back here for was because, you know, while out there I could work from 9 p.m. until 3 a.m., or whatever time I wanted and that was perfectly acceptable. I wanted to come back here and bring kind of that mentality here.”

Over the next three minutes, Pappas talks about starting SelectOut, Googling “Silicon Prairie,” his time in an entrepreneurship program in high school, the L5 Group and other activities and organizations in Nebraska.
