Two brothers and their uncle have teamed up to open Kansas City’s newest coworking space, Innovation cafe, in the former offices of an architecture firm in the city’s Crossroads Art District.

“After searching Kansas City for office incubators we couldn’t find anything that could fit our needs,” co-founder Jason Teeman said an in email earlier this week. His brother, Dustin, and uncle, David, are the other two co-founders and investors in the leased 5,500 square-foot space. (Photo: Jason, left, and Dustin Teeman. Photos courtesy of Innovation Cafe.)

“A little research on the internet we ran into a company in San Francisco called Nextspace that would fit us perfectly,” Jason said, “an open cafe atmosphere where we didn’t need dedicated space. So we decided to find a space that could accommodate this, and wa-la, Innovation Cafe was born.”

Innovation Cafe, which opened its doors on June 1, offers tenants a choice between cafe seating (around 35 seats available, $119/month) or a dedicated open office (13 spots available, $300/month). One executive suite was also available but it has been leased long-term.

In addition to the open offices occupied by the Teemans, each of them working full-time for the auction company Park West Gallery, Innovation Cafe is currently home to nine companies made up of 13 individuals.

If you’re interested in learning more about Innovation Cafe (2029 Wyandotte), they’re having an open house tonight from 6-8 p.m. Titled “Blue Urban Piper/Windows Lofts,” it’s open to the public, but they’ve teamed up with a nearby condos to try to connect local businesses.
