According to data collected by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), the second quarter saw $7.5 billion in venture capital deals nationwide, the highest single-quarter total since the second quarter of 2008, and several Kansas City-area tech startups were among 966 across the country to receive VC funding.

The Kansas City Business Journal last week published a list of Kansas- and Missouri-based companies that received venture capital funding in the quarter. The startups building web-based or mobile apps in Kansas and Missouri that were part of that big quarter of VC funding:

  • LockPath (Overland Park, Kan.), an information security software developer, received $1.1 million
  • me360 Mobile (Overland Park), the producers of a location-based mobile app that connects users to nearby businesses, received $480,000
  • SocialVolt (Lenexa, Kan.), which makes social media management software, received $280,000
  • AirMass (Lenexa), which produces a web-based facilities management software systems, received $100,000
  • Kickanotch Mobile (Shawnee Mission, Kan.), a provider of mobile marketing and monetization applications and platform management, which was formerly known as PRONTO! Mobile, received $80,000

According to the state-specific data (all courtesy of the NVCA), Kansas was far and away the leader in VC funding in the second quarter in the Silicon Prairie region, with 15 deals totaling $14.34 million. As the Business Journal pointed out, that total was thanks, in large part, to funds from the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation, which the Kansas legislature eliminated this spring. Missouri had two deals, both involving St. Louis companies, worth a total of $7.5 million. Iowa saw one deal for $6.85 million. Nebraska had no VC deals on record in the second quarter.
