The Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute‘s (GDMLI) quarterly Daybreak Leadership Breakfast series will be taking an in-depth look at the local entrepreneurial ecosystem when the group gathers at the Greater Des Moines Partnership Building (700 Locust) on May 19.

The May breakfast, with the theme “Silicon Prairie: A Developing Entrepreneurial Ecosystem“, will feature a panel of six entrepreneurs and startup enthusiasts from Des Moines and will be moderated by Mike Colwell, executive director of The Business Innovation Zone of Central Iowa.

Panelists include, Charise Flynn and Ben Milne of DwollaJohn LaMarche of Emerging Growth Group/VentureNet Iowa, Shane Reiser of Startup Weekend, Christian Renaud of StartupCity Des Moines and me, representing Silicon Prairie News.

The breakfast is being co-sponsored by The Davis Brown Law Firm and Silicon Prairie News.

Jason Stone, an attorney at Davis Brown, coordinator of the firm’s Startup Success program and alumnus of the GDMLI program, approached us to be involved.

“The theme … was selected due to the growing importance of entrepreneurial ventures to the region’s economy,” Stone (left, photo from davisbrownlaw.com) said recently via email. “Technological advances are occurring at an ever accelerating pace, and with each advance, threats to existing companies emerge and opportunities for new companies also become apparent. Because of this, entrepreneurial ecosystems are of critical importance and both public and private parties have been working to support new and entrepreneurial business.

“The breakfast is a forum for the GDMLI to introduce these concepts to its alumni and the public, while also providing an opportunity for local community and business leaders to discuss methods of facilitating growth and effectiveness.”

While the breakfast series typically attracts GDMLI members and alumni, the public is encouraged to attend. To RSVP for the breakfast, contact GDMLI Director Rebecca Batcheller at rbatcheller@gdmli.com or 515-286-4980.
