SitStay was one of first online pet stores, and it’s still growing after 15 years. Earlier this week, we profiled owner Darcie Krueger. When I met with Krueger, I asked her to give us some advice for entrepreneurs.

Along with “don’t buy the airplane,” another thing Darcie says that’s gotten her company through the down times is her outlook on competition:

I don’t care about the competition, there’s enough money out there for everybody, and there are enough customers for everybody. I don’t lose sleep over competition. I have people coming to me frequently saying, “Aren’t you worried about the competition?” They say, “Oh no, they are going to beat you to this or beat you to that.”

There’s room for everybody; there’s room for all of us. I do what I know is right; I sleep well at night. When people speak of competition, they think they have to “beat” the competition, they think they have to get ahead of the competition. What do they do? Do they lower prices? Do they carry something else? How do they “beat the competition?” That’s not how I want to live my life. I’m going to live my life the best way I know how: offer the right products to my customers, offer the right services to my customers, and those customers will stick. It’s proven historically with SitStay.com. They come, they’re loyal, and they stay.
