MindMixer – Lead Application Developer (Omaha) – Startup Job!

MindMixer is a web-based platform for meaningful civic engagement.

MindMixer.com is an Omaha, Nebraska-based start-up that has created a web based platform for meaningful civic engagement. Our clients include municipalities, elected officials, school districts, and professional organizations. We basically provide a simple to use forum for people to share their ideas, concerns and knowledge about real time projects in their community. For example, what if your community was considering a light rail system? Or what about rebuilding a park in a part of town that has decayed? Wouldn’t it be great to participate in this dialogue somehow? In most communities, a town-hall meeting is posted and typically a few people show up. Mainly to grab a donut and some stale coffee. Our business is radically changing that tired tradition and remaking it to allow people to contribute whenever and wherever they are on their own time frame. PC, Mac, phone, library computer…it will all be easily accessed. End result? More input, more dialogue, better communication and improved community involvement and decisions.

Red Nova Labs – Senior and Junior Hackers Wanted (Westwood, Kansas) – Startup Job!

Red Nova Labs is a web development and marketing agency as well as a technology think-tank.

Since 2009 Red Nova Labs has grown from a small team of unpaid optimists subsisting on soup, occasional indulgences at Oklahoma Joe’s, and weird Chinese import snacks, to a break-even startup with 20+ employees and a cool private building on Rainbow (currently being modified to feed our passions and productions). Our customers have loved our software-as-a-service products; over 3k businesses now subscribe to our marketing platforms.

We humbly believe this is just a start. We’re a team of serial entrepreneurs, eagerly sinking our teeth into any fresh web idea that might survive a beating with our market-analysis sticks—our growth is only limited by how fast we can execute on these massive models. We need to build more, faster. And that’s why we’re searching for talented, obsessive super-hackers who want to innovate and tackle large-scale challenges…

Like:

  • Analyzing, innovating, architecting, developing software for databases, frameworks, core tech components
  • Working with biz dev people to understand biz needs and translate them into tech design docs and products
  • Writing code and unit tests to deliver high quality products and technologies
  • Maintaining project timelines and meet all project deadlines
  • Eagerly taking on unfamiliar problems and making the time to discover “best practice” solutions
  • Contributing creative ideas to the business, including help on patents and intellectual property
  • Eating your own dog food (can’t just invent cool things and pass a plate of spaghetti; you have to clean it up)

Are you the super hacker we’re looking for?

Do You:

  • Have a sense of symbiosis between yourself and your
  • Pride yourself on being a social outcast so as to stay concentrated on “important things”?
  • Have a reputation for brevity as well as brilliance?
  • Crave learning new technologies, paying attention to details?
  • Write clean, efficient, well documented programs at the speed of a Windows crash?
  • Play well with others; communicate well with the users of your programs?
  • Bathe at least once a week and show up on time, most of the time?
  • Subscribe to sites that normal people don’t, like Hacker News, xkcd and Codinghorror?
  • Believe that the world is full of fascinating problems waiting to be solved?
  • Calculate the fastest possible path to your regular destinations, like the bar head?
  • Have a peculiar fondness for sci fi and strategy games?
  • Thrive under pressure; are you self-motivated toward coding challenges?
  • Twitch when you hear the word “Explorer”?
  • Know or pretty much recognize all programming languages?
  • Know all operating systems (Linux = your oxygen)?
  • Want to grow professionally?
  • Have a sense of humor?
  • Have thick skin?

If you answered “yes” to half or more of these q’s, you (and we) may have what it takes for you to thrive in our nimble organization. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to create groundbreaking system architectures, complete with lots and lots of code. And you’ll get to work closely with other social fits and misfits, both of which are vital in our collaborative environment that balances knowledge-sharing with blocks of focused, nonstop production time.

Red Nova Labs’ hacker roles are not for typical programmers; these are roles for programming masters. When the business smells opportunity, it’s your job to execute and build a solution—a solution that provides a road-map for future development. You will ensure that the business can iterate and pivot quickly. And you will research—because you can’t be a cutting-edge programmer unless you “get” the newest tools and architectures.

While a college degree is nice, it’s not a requirement here. We recognize that many great programmers are self-taught. In lieu of a formal educ, however, we’d like to see a list of your personal projects and the open-source projects you’ve contributed to. If you have neither of these, then you are probably not a hacker. Make sure your resume has your github profile on it with at least five projects (that are not forks). Also on our hacker fantasy list:

  • Hard core web backend development experience, as well as the ability to quickly learn and apply new techs.
  • Strong SQL and data model design skills; experience with one or more databases in a production environment
  • Open source skills in techs such as, NoSQL, Memcached, MapReduce, Crawlers, Extractors, AJAX, etc.
  • Experience with massively distributed and large scale software systems
  • Knowledge of web services: both utilization and creation of APIs
  • Experience writing clear and concise documentations for other developers
  • Strong platform skills in Shell Linux
  • Know at least one challenging coding interview question, and a couple of good jokes

In our Westwood, Kansas office (about a mile west of the Plaza) we maintain a fun, high-speed environment. That said, no one is spared from opinions, jokes and coaching—brilliance notwithstanding. In return, we offer:

  • Money: Tell us what you’re worth in the market.
  • Relocation: Up to $10k moving expenses if you don’t live in the KC metro area.
  • Stuff: Up to $5k to outfit your office with the technology you need to kick ass.
  • More stuff: Benefits, vacation, options, that kind of stuff.
  • Perks: Coffee, tea, juice, soda, fruit, nuts, Sixlets, random happy hours.
  • Admiration: Nuff said.

How to Apple:

  • Send resume to rzhou@rednovalabs.com
  • Include a note describing your passions, what drives you, and how you approach your work
  • No phone calls or drop-ins
