Graphic.ly draws in Ninth Division – ‘Extension of current dev team’

In late January we reported on a local connection to the $3 million funding round of Boulder, Colorado-based Graphic.ly (left, icon of their iPad app). Omaha-based Dundee Venture Capital participated in that round and we grabbed an interview with Dundee’s founder Mark Hasebroock the day the story broke (see: “Dundee Venture Capital participates in Graphic.ly’s $3M round).

With this story, we’re a good week late on breaking the news, but it’s another great local connection to call out.

Last Tuesday, Ninth Division, an Omaha-based software development company, announced they’ve done work and will be doing more work for Graphic.ly. “Graphic.ly is a rad startup out of Colorado whose mission is to bring you great comics to be consumed in a social way. This last month in January, we started working with them,” wrote Ninth Division’s Andy Peters on their company blog. “We look forward to working more with Graphic.ly; if anything for the sake that we love comics too,” he concluded the post (read their post: “We’re working with Graphic.ly).

In a phone interview last week, Peters told me that Ninth Division began working with Graphic.ly after connecting with their CEO Micah Baldwin (a Big Omaha 2009 speaker) and helping with bugs fixes for their current iPad app, version 1.1. Graphic.ly blogged about it on its release: “While it likely seemed we were laying low, we’ve been working with the great folks at Ninth Division to get this in your hands as quickly as possible.”

On Monday, we reached out to Baldwin by email to learn more about why they choose Ninth Division and what lies ahead for the two.

After an exhaustive search, which include working with a few other vendors, we decided on working with Ninth Division for two simple reasons: They develop high quality code, and are extremely responsive. For all intents and purposes, we view them as an extension of our current development team, and work with them as such.

We expect to have them involved in all of our iOS efforts, as we begin to create a convergence of our technologies and feature sets. For us, we view iOS as a central platform for our future success, and are excited to have Ninth Division as part of that.

With these strong Silicon Prairie connections, expect to hear more about Graphic.ly in the future. And if you’d like to learn more about the Dundee investment, check out our video interview with Baldwin from the day of the announcement: “Micah Baldwin of Graphic.ly talks about latest round of funding.”
