Big Omaha Video Series: Scott Harrison of charity: water

Omaha September 21, 2010 by Jeff Slobotski

Produced by Silicon Prairie News. Video by Malone & Company. Post-production by Event1 Video.

Today, we're excited to release the first video in the series of presentations from Big Omaha 2010, which was held at KANEKO, May 12-15. We chose to begin with one of the most powerful talks from the event, that of charity: water founder Scott Harrison.

Harrison's presentation was not only emotionally moving but it was a convincing call to action to get involved and reject apathy towards a world crisis that can be solved.

In the days leading up to Big Omaha, our community raised $5,000 for charity: water. During the event, and shortly thereafter, an additional $10,000 was raised, bringing the overall total to just over $15,000. Since the event, several conversations have taken place between other Big Omaha speakers and Harrison to determine how they can best support the amazing efforts of the charity: water team.

If you haven't already made a contribution to charity: water's efforts, or even if you have, please visit charitywater.org to learn more about their work and how you can further support this tremendous organization.

Please extend your thanks to Scott on Twitter – @scottharrison – for his willingness to come to Omaha and share his story with us, and look for the next video in the Big Omaha series to be posted this Thursday!

Big Omaha is Silicon Prairie News' premier annual event held each May to inspire, educate and connect entrepreneurs, especially those with an interest in the tech industry. Big Omaha 2011 will be held May 11-13, 2011 at KANEKO.

So there I was, at Big Omaha, hoping to talk to some great people, seeing what ideas I could come up with, totally focused on getting the most out of the day for me, me, me.

Some guy sat down next to me while we were waiting for things to start and I struck up a conversation about his iPad, and normally I ask what people who they are, what they do, etc. but it was still pretty early in the morning and I hadn't gotten into the groove yet.

When they announced Scott Harrison's talk, I stood up to clap and noticed the guy beside me walked away... to go on stage.

After his talk, I realized this guy who casually sat down next to me, who I thought was just some guy with an iPad, was changing the world and all I got to talk to him about was trivialities.

Ohh, great choice, SPN folks, on choosing to post Scott's talk first. It was one of my favorite highlights from the event, and not only moved me personally, but inspired me to think bigger and more creatively within my businesses as well.

High-five!

@Corey - Great story. That's one of the amazing things about Big Omaha as compared to the larger tech conferences.

Corey, that is an awesome little story you got there. Scott seems like an awesome, genuine dude. "If not us, who? If not now, when?"

Scott I missed this talk live at Big Omaha and wondered what all the hoopla was about afterward. Now I understand. Moved beyond words by your story, your faith and your mission. Like Gary V said at the time, this was a talk that makes you cry your face off!

Great story, wish I could do more to help. If you were to chose a charity... this would be the one.
