Big Omaha: Behind the scenes with Malone & Company

The week has finally arrived! In the next few days, we’ll be releasing the first Big Omaha 2010 speaker video. Before we do so, however, we’ve asked Malone & Company, the team behind the first-class photography and video of Big Omaha 2010, to share the backstory and amount of work they put into the two and a half-day event.

Malone & Company’s Sally Nellson/Barrett (left) took on the assignment of the guest post below, and just as she’s responsible in telling the stories of Malone & Company’s clients, she shared with us a unique story about the behind the scenes of Big Omaha 2010.

Sally can be reached by email at sally@maloneandco.com.

Having attended Big Omaha in 2009, there was no question that we wanted to be there again. But we knew we wanted to play a role, if possible, to help the team behind it – Jeff Slobotski, Dusty Davidson and Danny Schreiber. They asked, and we jumped at the chance to capture the event and share what we saw and heard.

As part of the project we undertook, to create a promotional video for next year’s conference, we interviewed as many of the speakers as we could to understand what brought them to Omaha and get their take on what Jeff and Dusty are doing. We also wanted to talk to as many attendees as possible to capture the inspiration and energy they no doubt would feel being a part of Big Omaha.

In preparation for the shoot we wrote an outline for how we might approach the promotional piece, calculated how much equipment and people we might need. Then the day arrived and we got to work.

The day before the shoot we did a walk through at the KANEKO, got in sync with the lighting and audio crews, and found a sweet spot to shoot the speakers. We started shooting at the Slowdown and didn’t stop until the last person walked out of the KANEKO on Saturday.

Here are some statistics from the shoot:

11 – the number of people making up the crew

  Malone & Company

F.O.M.’s (friends of Malone & Company)

2,164 – The number of photos from the photo booth

One of the coolest things that happened at Big Omaha was the photo booth. Tony Noecker from BrightMix (pictured far left) had written a program that would take the images shot, apply a pre-determined effects filter, and stream them live online at flickr.com/photos/siliconprairienews.

8 – The number of Vook project edits before we finally got it right!

5 – The number of speakers we were able to interview

One of the bigger challenges we had was to try to capture the big name speakers and get them to talk to us about their experience at Big Omaha. Some were able to give us more time than others.

516 – The number of gigs of footage, stills, audio, etc. on the project drive

As with most things, these are just numbers and numbers that can’t adequately convey the joy we had being part of Big Omaha. We thank Jeff, Dusty, Danny and our entire crew for helping to make the shoot such a success!
