The popular free iPhone app BATTLE BEARS, a game created by Omaha-based SkyVu Pictures, now has an official prequel, BATTLE BEARS -1.

Unlike previous versions, the new gameplay allows you to move the main characters, OLIVER and RIGGS, throughout the playing area as they defend the Ursa Major ship from invaders.

Benjamin Vu, creator of BATTLE BEARS and founder of SkyVu, told email newsletter subscribers that the new controls take a little time getting used to. For avid gamers, he compared them to MiniGore‘s control system, but he wrote that they have a closer point of view “that really gets you into the game.”

For $0.99 you can play OLIVER’s campaign, and for an additional $0.99 you can upgrade to RIGGS’ more challenging campaign, which contains all new levels and a Monster Boss.

Benjamin concluded the email stating, “We’re adding more mid-bosses, campaigns, and weapons in future updates. It’s our intention to keep updating BATTLE BEARS -1 regularly.”

To let you try out BATTLE BEARS -1 for yourself, Benjamin has passed along two free codes to us. Reply with a comment below showing your interest in the game and you’ve earned yourself a free code.

Here are four of the colorful bullet points from SkyVu’s Apple app store description:

  • Ride the “LOL Sled” down the snowy hill of brand new cut-scenes linking together the compelling story line of the Battle Bears’ adventures.
  • Cast aside your reliance on your dad’s GPS and learn to read a freaking map as you navigate the many rooms of the Ursa Major.
  • Fight queasiness and stomach upheaval as you battle against thrilling and mostly disturbing boss monsters.
  • Get your hair blown to the back of the auditorium with, honestly, some of the best original music in any App ever.
