MVF: J. Joe Ricketts speaking tomorrow, two tickets up for grabs

Omaha April 21, 2010 by Danny Schreiber

Originally, Pete Ricketts, founder of the Omaha-based asset management company Drakon, was slated to speak at tomorrow's Midlands Venture Forum (MVF) Networking Dinner, but due to a personal conflict he will not be able to make it. Instead, we'll have the fortune of hearing from his father J. Joe Ricketts, the founder Ameritrade.

Here's more information from MVF's website, MVForum.com/events:

J. Joe Ricketts founded and built Ameritrade, the revolutionary online brokerage firm headquartered in Omaha, which provides online brokerage services. Over the course of his career, Mr. Ricketts has been recognized as an international leader in developing new services for the self-directed investor and he continues to serve as a Board member for TD Ameritrade.

Mr. Ricketts currently operates several for-profit and not-for-profit ventures including High Plains Bison, The American Film Company, Jackson Fork Ranch & Lodge, DNAinfo, Opportunity Education and Citizens Against Earmarks. The Ricketts family also recently acquired the Chicago Cubs baseball team. A native of Nebraska, but now a citizen of Wyoming, Mr. Ricketts received his B.A. degree in economics from Creighton University in Omaha. He is a former Trustee of the American Enterprise Institute, is a former Director of Creighton University, and is a former member of the Board of Trustees for Father Flanagan’s Girls and Boys Town (“Boys Town”).

Joe shows the sort of ambition that makes the difference. Omaha has so many good things going for it, but culturally, we tend to be reluctant to grab the big prize. Our culture is a virtue in many ways (polite, respectful, hardworking), but also keeps us down in some ways from doing something insanely great and putting a dent in the universe. Joe didn't care that he was in Omaha, he wanted to make something that kicked ass, and he did. Amazing role model for all Nebraska Entrepreneurs.

Thanks for the offer SPN, I will see you tonight. I was interested to see what Mr. Rickets thoughts were on the triple bottom line, and what him and others are doing to rally for a sustainable US budget.
