Forbes.com, the digital flagship of Forbes’ business publications, rated cities across the nation on a 12-point scale to determine the best places for business and careers. Topping the list is Des Moines, who moved up from 7th position in a similar list last year. Forbes cites the educated workforce, low cost of doing business, and moderate and stable housing market as part of the reason Des Moines was recognized.

Cities like Des Moines, Iowa; Provo, Utah; and Fort Collins, Colo.; lead our 12th annual list of areas with the most economic opportunity.

The Great Recession ravaged almost every big city across the United States in 2009. Home prices were down in 182 of the 200 largest metro areas, while household incomes fell in 94% of these areas.
