Five in Five with Troy Rutter from TroyRutter.com

Des Moines December 30, 2009 by Danny Schreiber

  1. Name: Troy Rutter
  2. Full-time job: Senior Developer at Captain Jack Communications
  3. City you’re blogging from: Des Moines
  4. Name, subject and URL of your blog: TroyRutter.com; blogging, social media tools, Google Adsense, and marketing; troyrutter.com
  5. Link to your video:

1. What is the name, subject and URL of your blog?

TroyRutter.com; blogging, social media tools, Google Adsense, and marketing; troyrutter.com

2. Why do you blog?

I think the main reason I blog is to connect with others interested in the niches I have invested my time in. Specifically social media, Google Adsense, internet marketing, and branding. By blogging about my success and frustrations, it generates good discussions with like-minded people, and offers different perspectives. I do not approve of "shock posts" to drive comments, I feel the conversation should follow organically.

3. How long have you been blogging and what blogging software do you use?

The first date on my blog posts are from 2005, but I was blogging before that. According to archive.org, my blog appeared on my web site in early 2004. I originally was a huge fan of Movable Type, but have since moved exclusively to Wordpress due to the flexibility of plugins and design.

4. What’s your favorite blog (besides your own)?

"Big Blogs" I enjoy are  joelcomm.com, cc-chapman.com, chrisbrogan.com, and locally I read thebrandchef.com and converstations.com regularly.

5. What do you think the state of the blogosphere is in our region?

Here in Des Moines we have a huge  blogging community that makes it really helpful for beginners to get started. You may have heard of the "Bloganostra" meetings, or as its formally called "Central Iowa Bloggers" which meets every first Friday of the month at Panera Bread in Clive, Iowa. Here you will find bloggers, podcasters, web developers, marketers, brand consultants, and more who come together to talk face-to-face about what is going on both in their line of work, and in the blogosphere in general. It is a great collaborative atmosphere.

Troy's blog holds a regular spot in my RSS reader. From his insight into Google Adsense to his musings about social media, he's always got something to shed new light on. In fact, it was Troy's video review of the Kodak Zi8 on his blog that most heavily influenced our company's decision to pick that over the Flip Cam last month.

Nice work, Troy!
