Linkedin LogoA couple Fridays ago, about 60 Midlands Venture Forum members and non-members gathered over the lunch hour to hear April Kelly, Director of the LinkedIn Service Center, present on ways to harness the power of social networking sites.

At the opening of her presentation, Kelly asked the audience: “How many of you Google yourself?” After about half of the attendees raised their hands, she explained that unlike other search results for their name, they have complete control over their social network profiles. Her LinkedIn profile, for example, is her number one search result.

Beyond the ability to reproduce your resume online, Kelly explained how to use LinkedIn to strengthen your professional relationships, share your business knowledge, build your personal brand, and hire and search for jobs. She also gave hints and suggestions on how to make your profile stand out.

Following her presentation, Kelly fielded questions from the audience and her colleague, Linda Reeder, a training specialist, promoted LinkedIn’s webcasts.

LinkedIn 101 – Webcast covering the basics of LinkedIn, from creating and maintaining a robust profile to managing your account and preferences. Held every Wednesday at 1 p.m.
